The WhatsApp message we probably get most often is a screenshot of someone's website beside a Google search where it's nowhere to be seen. Nearly every time, the cause is one of a short list of things.
1. Is your site just too new?
If your site went live two weeks ago, yes: Google hasn't had time to trust it yet. You can't skip this stage. Google's own starter guide says "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months" (Google Search Central).
2. Does your site load too slowly?
If it takes more than a few seconds on a phone, it does, and most visitors leave before the page finishes. We've opened sites that take eight or nine seconds to load on an ordinary mobile connection. Heavy, uncompressed images are usually the main culprit.
3. Does it work properly on mobile?
If it was only ever tested on a desktop, probably not, and that costs you rankings and visitors. Most searches happen on a phone now. If your site was designed and tested only on a desktop monitor, Google notices, and so does every visitor who gives up after a few seconds.
4. Are your titles and meta descriptions missing or generic?
On many small business sites they are. Each page needs its own title tag and meta description, written for that page rather than left as whatever the template generated. Google's guidance says to "Avoid repeated or boilerplate text in <title> elements" (Google Search Central).
5. The content is thin, or repeated across pages
Five location pages that are the same paragraph with the city name swapped won't fool Google, and it usually ranks none of them well.
6. Nothing else on the internet points back to you
Backlinks and citations are one way Google judges whether a business is real and trusted. A new business that isn't mentioned anywhere else online starts from a much weaker spot.
7. You're targeting keywords way above your site's current weight class
If your six-month-old site is chasing "digital marketing agency" with no city attached, you're up against the whole country. A narrower target like "digital marketing agency Cuttack" gives a newer site a real chance.
How do you check which of these seven applies to you?
Work through them in order of how much each one matters, starting with indexing and speed. Don't guess. First, check how old the site is and whether Google has indexed it. Searching "site:yourwebsite.com" shows which pages are indexed, which quickly confirms or rules out the too-new problem. Second, put your homepage through a free page speed tool on mobile and desktop, so loading and mobile problems show up as hard numbers instead of a vague feeling. Third, open three or four key pages and check that each has its own specific title and description, not a generic default. Fourth, compare the written content on your most important pages with what a thorough competitor page covers. Thin, repetitive content is easy to spot once you go looking for it.
Why do these seven problems rarely occur alone?
They cluster because they often share a cause: a site built in a hurry with no SEO attention from the start. In the sites we audit, they seldom appear one at a time. A site with thin, repeated content often lacks proper meta descriptions too, since both come from treating content as an afterthought instead of a planned part of the build. That's useful to know. Fix the root cause by making content and technical SEO real priorities from here on, and several of the seven tend to clear up together, so you don't need seven separate fixes.
A quick worked example
Take a boutique interior design firm in Bhubaneswar, eight months in with no visible ranking progress, convinced its SEO is broken. An audit of a site like this often finds three of the seven issues stacked up: pages taking over seven seconds to load because of unoptimised portfolio images, generic auto-generated meta descriptions on every page, and an attempt to rank for the broad national term "interior designer" with nothing local attached. The fixes are plain ones. Compress the portfolio images, write a unique description for every page, and shift the keyword focus to "interior designer Bhubaneswar" and similar local terms. Nothing dramatic changes. Three fixable problems that were working against the site just stop doing so, and that's often enough to get rankings moving.
Frequently asked questions
Which of these seven issues should I fix first if I find several at once?
Start with page speed and mobile usability. They affect every visitor on every page, and the fixes are usually quicker and more mechanical than content or backlink work, which takes longer to pay off.
How do I know if my keywords are genuinely too competitive for my site right now?
Search the exact term you're targeting and look at who ranks on page one. If big, established national sites fill it, a smaller local business will probably need a narrower version of that keyword to stand a realistic chance any time soon.
Is it possible to fix all seven of these myself without hiring an agency?
The mechanical fixes, like compressing images and writing proper meta descriptions, are well within reach without technical expertise. Backlink building and a full content strategy usually benefit from experienced, ongoing attention, because they involve judgement calls that are hard to get right without a background in the field.
Putting it together
Some of these problems are technical (speed, mobile, missing meta tags), which is why we always check website development basics as part of any SEO diagnosis. Others are about content and authority, where a proper content strategy earns its keep. At TrueDevMedia, the audit we run before starting any SEO work is more or less a walk through this list using your own site. Reach out to us and we'll tell you plainly which of the seven is holding your site back.
